Why your customers can’t edit their Shopify order

· BeforeShip

“There’s no edit button on my order.” That’s normal. Shopify gives customers no way to change an order after checkout, and there’s no setting to enable it.

Why Shopify doesn’t allow it

Edits change payment, tax and inventory, and can race your warehouse. Shopify leaves it to staff in admin, or to apps that add guardrails.

What to tell customers right now

Put a line in your order confirmation: “Wrong address or size? Reply within 2 hours and we’ll fix it before it ships.” Use our free email templates.

Add a self-serve window

An app adds an “Edit order” option on the thank-you and order status pages for a time you set, holds fulfillment meanwhile, and locks when the window closes or packing starts.

How BeforeShip works

  1. Customer checks out. BeforeShip places a native Shopify fulfillment hold for the window you choose (default 2 hours).
  2. Customer self-serves. From their order status page they can fix the shipping address or phone, change quantity, add or remove items, swap a variant, or cancel.
  3. Documents update. The branded invoice PDF and packing slip regenerate after every change; the invoice number stays the same.
  4. Window closes. When time runs out — or packing starts — edits lock and the hold releases to your normal fulfillment flow.

Customers never see the name “BeforeShip” — everything carries your store’s branding.
