How to change the shipping address on a Shopify order
A customer emails: “I put the wrong address!” Here’s how to fix it in Shopify — and how to stop these emails from reaching you at all.
As a merchant: edit the address in Shopify admin
- Open Orders and select the order.
- In the Shipping address card, click the edit (pencil) option.
- Update the fields and save.
- If a shipping label was already bought, void it and buy a new one.
- Re-send or re-print any invoice or packing slip that shows the old address.
This only works if you catch it before the order is fulfilled. Once it ships, you’re into carrier intercepts or reships.
Can customers change it themselves?
Not by default. Shopify gives customers no way to edit the address after checkout — they must contact you. That’s why address emails pile up in the first hour after orders.
Let customers fix it before you ship
An app like BeforeShip adds a self-serve edit on the order status page for a window you choose (default 2 hours), and holds fulfillment natively in Shopify so nothing ships mid-change. The invoice and packing slip regenerate automatically. See how customer address edits work.
Free for your first 100 orders. Same features on every plan.
Install BeforeShipAfter it ships
Contact the carrier for an address correction or intercept (fees vary), or wait for return-to-sender and reship. Prevention is far cheaper — see preventing wrong-address shipments.
FAQ
Can I change the shipping address after a Shopify order is placed?
Yes, merchants can edit it in Shopify admin before fulfillment. Customers can’t by default.
Can customers edit their own shipping address in Shopify?
Not natively. Apps like BeforeShip add a self-serve address edit during a short window before fulfillment.
What if the order already shipped?
You’ll need a carrier address correction or intercept, or a reship.
Shoppers fix the address, swap a variant, or cancel — before it ships. Invoices and packing slips stay correct. Free for your first 100 orders.
