Shopify fulfillment holds explained
A fulfillment hold tells Shopify — and any connected warehouse or 3PL app — “don’t ship this yet.” Used well, a short hold catches mistakes before they cost a reship.
What a hold does
Held fulfillment orders can’t be fulfilled until the hold is released. Apps and fulfillment services that respect Shopify’s fulfillment order status won’t pick them up while held.
When to hold orders
- A short edit window after checkout so customers can fix mistakes
- Fraud review
- Pre-orders or awaiting stock
- Address verification
Manual vs automated holds
Holding every order by hand doesn’t scale. BeforeShip places a native hold automatically at payment, lets customers edit or cancel during the window, and releases the hold when the window ends — or locks edits immediately if packing starts. How the edit window works.
Free for your first 100 orders. Same features on every plan.
Install BeforeShipPicking a hold length
Shorter windows ship faster; longer windows catch more mistakes. Most stores land between 1 and 4 hours. Detailed guidance: choosing an order edit window.
Check your 3PL
Confirm your warehouse integration reads Shopify fulfillment order holds rather than pulling every paid order immediately. Test with a single order first.
