Guide
Can customers edit a Shopify order after checkout?
Short answer: not by default. Shopify lets merchants edit orders in admin, but customers can’t change anything themselves once they’ve paid.
What merchants can edit in Shopify admin
- Shipping address and contact details
- Add or remove items and adjust quantities (Edit order)
- Apply discounts and collect or refund the difference
What customers can’t do natively
- Change their shipping address
- Swap a size or colour
- Change quantity or add a forgotten item
- Cancel the order
All of these become support requests — and a race against your warehouse.
Adding customer self-serve edits
BeforeShip adds these actions to the customer’s order status page for a window you set (default 2 hours): fix the address or phone, change quantity, add/remove items, swap a variant, or cancel. The order is held natively in Shopify so it doesn’t ship mid-change, and the invoice and packing slip regenerate. Post-purchase order editing.
Free for your first 100 orders. Same features on every plan.
