Can you edit a Shopify order after payment?

· BeforeShip

Yes. Shopify lets staff edit a paid order as long as it isn’t fulfilled. Customers can’t do it themselves unless you add an app.

What staff can edit on a paid order

What happens to the payment

If the new total is higher, Shopify lets you send the customer an invoice for the balance. If it’s lower, you refund the difference. Taxes recalculate when the destination changes.

What you can’t edit

Letting customers do it themselves

Most edits come in the first hour. A short self-serve window plus a fulfillment hold means customers let customers fix their own address, change quantity or swap a variant without emailing you. See post-purchase order editing.

How BeforeShip works

  1. Customer checks out. BeforeShip places a native Shopify fulfillment hold for the window you choose (default 2 hours).
  2. Customer self-serves. From their order status page they can fix the shipping address or phone, change quantity, add or remove items, swap a variant, or cancel.
  3. Documents update. The branded invoice PDF and packing slip regenerate after every change; the invoice number stays the same.
  4. Window closes. When time runs out — or packing starts — edits lock and the hold releases to your normal fulfillment flow.

Customers never see the name “BeforeShip” — everything carries your store’s branding.
