Cancellations
Let shoppers cancel Shopify orders before packing starts
Shoppers change their minds. Sometimes within minutes of paying. If fulfillment has not started, the cheapest clean outcome is usually a cancel and refund — not a return after the parcel has already moved through the carrier network.
Shopify merchants who only offer returns after delivery pay for pick, pack, label, shipping, inbound return handling, and often a restocking conversation. Cancel-before-fulfillment short-circuits that cost when the shopper decides early enough.
Why cancel-before-ship beats a return
A return assumes the item left your warehouse (or at least entered the fulfillment queue). A pre-fulfillment cancel means stock never left, the label was never bought, and the shopper gets a straightforward refund path while the order is still under your control.
That does not replace your return policy for delivered goods. It adds an earlier exit for the high-intent “I ordered twice / wrong gift / need to stop this” cases that hit support inboxes every day.
What shoppers need to cancel cleanly
- A visible cancel action on the order experience while cancellation is still allowed.
- A clear time boundary so they know when the option disappears.
- A refund path that matches how you capture and refund in Shopify — no mystery about when money comes back.
- No race where the warehouse packs while support is still negotiating the cancel.
How BeforeShip handles cancel in the edit window
BeforeShip lets shoppers cancel inside the same merchant-set window used for address and phone edits — after paid, until packing starts. Default window is 2 hours from paid. During the window, Shopify holds the order natively so packing does not start on an order the shopper is about to cancel.
When the window ends, or packing starts, cancel (and edits) lock. That protects the warehouse from last-second cancels after work has begun, while still giving shoppers a fair early exit.
Offer cancel-before-pack without turning every request into a support ticket. Install BeforeShip and set the window that fits your ops.
Install BeforeShipRefund path and merchant control
Cancellation before fulfillment should follow your Shopify payment and refund practices. The operational win is timing: you cancel while the order is still held, inventory never entered a pick wave, and documents are not printed for a dead shipment.
BeforeShip’s v1 scope is address/phone edit, cancel, branded invoice PDF, and packing slip PDF. It does not try to be a returns platform. Returns after delivery remain a separate workflow; cancel-before-ship is the cheaper sibling when the shopper acts in time.
Policy tips that reduce refund fights
- State the window in plain language. “You can cancel within X hours of payment, until packing starts.”
- Align support macros. If the window is open, send them to self-serve cancel. If it is closed, explain packing has started and point to your return policy if needed.
- Match window length to pack speed. Fast same-day packers often use shorter windows; made-to-order or next-day waves can afford longer ones. See our guide on choosing an order edit window.
- Keep documents honest. If an order is cancelled before pack, you should not be printing packing slips for it. Held orders and locked windows keep that discipline.
Pricing note (caps only)
BeforeShip exposes the same cancel and edit features on every plan. Free covers 100 paid online Shopify orders lifetime. Starter is $99/year or $15/mo for 1,000 orders per calendar month. Unlimited is $499/year or $79/mo with no order cap. Hitting a cap pauses edits and PDFs; it never auto-charges. POS does not count toward caps.
Illustrative cost of a late cancel vs an early one
Imagine a mid-priced apparel order. If the shopper cancels while the order is still held, you refund and restock in place — no carton, no label, no outbound zone skip. If the same shopper only reaches you after delivery, you may pay outbound shipping, inbound return shipping, inspection time, and a slower restock. Exact amounts vary by category and carrier; the directional lesson is stable: earlier exits are cheaper when fulfillment has not started.
That is why pairing cancel with the same window as address edits matters. Shoppers already open the order page to fix a typo; offering cancel there reduces “please stop this order” emails that arrive minutes before pack.
Coordinate with finance on how refunds appear in Shopify so support can answer “when do I get my money back?” without inventing timelines. BeforeShip’s job is the operational gate — window, hold, lock — not replacing your payment gateway’s refund settlement rules.
